What story are we telling ourselves? Sometimes we can get so lost in the internal dialogue of how a situation is or will be that we forget that we are actually creating what is happening in reality through the way that we are thinking. The conscious mind will instinctively try to keep us from changing. Naturally, we are creatures of habit, and any changes can seem to be an attack on our identity. However, we change all the time, unconsciously. We are influenced by things we see and hear, whether or not we notice them. If we change unconsciously, then we can purposefully set our environment up to influence ourselves positively. In other words, we can consciously change our environment in order to unconsciously change ourselves.
How though? By selecting what we watch, what we listen to, and where we go. Some of it will be consciously absorbed, but most of it will be absorbed by our unconscious mind. For example, someone may walk by, and in an instant you may notice the way they are walking or the shoes they have on. At that moment did you also notice their facial expression, gold necklace, or the other people walking? There is so much to absorb and digest, and nobody is capable of observing everything at the same time. However, unconsciously we take it all in. Therefore, when we choose to be in positive or otherwise beneficial environments, we can steer our identity towards whatever we desire.
What else can we do? One thing that I’ve found to be instrumental is affirmations. Affirmations are short phrases said aloud. Phrases such as, “I live abundantly”, “I am strong”, or “I spread peace wherever I go”. Honestly, at first I thought saying affirmations was pointless, but eventually I realized it influences my thinking. It could even be frightening at first. It’s not easy to shift identity, and words manifest. When saying affirmations, put real emotion into it. We have to pretend as if we’re saying these things to a friend, and that they are believable. It gets easier over time, and the real interesting thing is when your identity and environment actually start to change. When our identity shifts, our experiences, our thoughts, and the way we react to new situations changes as well. In other words, we start to write a new story.
What story are we going to write? What characters are we going to play?
We are able to create the reality we want if we just choose to write it in a way that is believable to ourselves. One great way to shift what we believe is to shift what we experience subconsciously, and we can consciously do that.
